Dave Giles Bangarangs the Beat100 victory gong!
Well another month is under our belt here at Beat100 and we’ve seen an incredible surge in new music throughout the site. However, there can be only one winner and this month we are pleased to see Dave Giles taking the top spot to win $500 with his incredible song and hilarious music video “Bangarang”.
Dave Giles hit the Beat100 music video charts like a thunderstorm coming out of a clear blue sky and managed to storm to first place in the music video charts. His incredible style, musical talent and hilarious video quickly captured the imagination of Beat100 users and he managed to break a Beat100 record with over 800 votes in less than 3 weeks!
The speed with which Dave dominated the May music charts is testament to his incredible talents as a performer and producer. Dave is one of the few performers who can blend comedy and music seamlessly; without compromising the quality of either. His entry to the Beat100 music video charts “Bangarang” was a comic take on growing up and everything we leave behind, or in this case try not to, as we age. The beautiful blend of guitar and ukulele complimented the theme of the song perfectly and create a tone and style that fit perfectly with the early summer warmth we’ve all been enjoying.
The vocals are soft and gentle but the lyrical talent on display is absolutely astounding. The lyrics are warming and happy while playing, half sentimentally and half comically, on our experiences as children and all the great things we have when we are young. Despite a chorus that reminds us of all the things we regretfully have to deal with as adults the fondness of childhood memories and the humour just creates a wonderful song that warms the heart through and through.
And then there was the video itself! Dave used some great stop animation techniques and played extensively on the concept of misheard lyrics to add even more comedy to his song. What was resulted was a hilarious video that complimented the song perfectly. Overall congratulations to Dave and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!
In second place we had one of the most unique songs and entries Beat100 has ever had; Tall Dark Friend’s – “This is Pop.” This dark power pop meets electro song is one of the most interesting songs we’ve seen in many years. It is a comedy song that plays cleverly on what pop actually is and what the word itself means. At the same time it takes a dark twist on modern culture and the activities of the clubbing, drinking generations. The structure of the song is incredibly complex with dark vocal driven verses interspersed with comic mickey takes of the music world. Tall Dark Friend’s voice is simply incredible and the use of some of the grimiest most head thumping beats we’ve heard in years makes the song into something that literally falls part way into a club classic, part way into a joke and partly into a dark ballad. Overall it’s simply incredible and you have to see it for yourself to really enjoy its full impact!
Finally, in third place, we have Rogerio Vaz with his beautiful cover of Coldplay’s - The Scientist. For a solo performance and a cover Rogerio managed to capture the essence of Coldplay’s classic track whilst making it his own. His cover really demonstrates his talent as a guitarist and vocalist. His cover brought a new soul to the song and managed to attract hundreds of votes thanks to its simplicity and beauty.
Beat100 would like to congratulate all our winners and thank everyone for continuing to vote for such great new music; we can’t wait to bring you more next month!
