It's fairly rare that we get excited about covers here at Beat100. For any artist it is very hard to cover a song without people thinking - well its ok but the original is better. Part of this is, of course, that when you hear a great song you will always hear it a certain way and, generally, covers seem to simply be a re-iteration of something we've already seen.
There are however, exceptions, and Us and Her's cover of Misha B's Home Run is certainly an exception. The original is a fantastic, soulful song that is very much a club song. It's not something you'd listen to outside of a club and it’s a bump and grind of a song.
Us and Her's cover manages to put an entirely new spin on the music and brings out a much, much more soulful side of the song that is sadly missing from the original. You often find with club anthems of today that an artist has an incredible voice and great vocals but they are lost in the modern miasma of too much synth and oppressive bass beats.
Us and Her strip away all of this in order to bring us a cover full of emotion, soul and depth. It's a cover that retains the essence of the song but then builds something new with it. Us and Her's style is a mixture of soul and jazz with flavours of gentle indie and it is absolutely beautiful.
The lead singer Casey Kaye has a sublime soul voice with a huge amount of power and a calm relaxed tone - Oh and she's 12! It's incredible to see such immense talent for someone so young and she manages to bring something truly inspiring and beautiful to the lyrics.
The backing vocals compliment her perfectly and add some reverb, tone and depth exactly when its needed. Then of course there's the rest of the music. The music is a far cry from the original and adds a huge amount of jazz and soul to the song. Our first real indication of where things are going is when the trumpet breaks in right after the vocal intro. It's a soft half muted trumpet sound that has classic jazz written all over it. The gentle piano that adds undertones and occasionally overtones to the song is beautiful and gentle. It's reminiscent of some modern indie and classic soul and the gentle melody adds beautifully. The backing music in the form of a gentle drum beat is unassuming but forms the tapestry on which this song can be laid out.
Overall this is a fantastically original cover and it adds so much to the original. It’s actually better than the original by a long, long way. This family band really are incredible and you should check them out and vote them up!
